All in a Day's Play

The other day Anton wanted to go camping, but I convinced him that the low 40's were not camping appropriate temperatures. Though, I appeased him by letting us all go hiking the next day. We went and hiked on the same trail we went on when we saw all the nasty spiders. Thankfully it is not spider season right now, so we were able to hike free from heebee jeebees.

It was a beautiful day for a hike. The kids were being troopers. Alex hiked about half of the time and rode on daddy's shoulders the other half.

The trail goes through a swampy area and along the river. You can see the river here:

I was seriously concerned that my kids were going to fall in the river. They can't seem to walk in straight lines and they always manage to veer towards the edge. I did manage to keep them dry, though.

Sadly, our hike was cut short. We got about a third of the way around the loop and came upon this:

That would be a body of water where the trail is supposed to be. We decided not to turn this hike into a river walk. We turned around and headed back the way we came.

Ella came upon a tree in the middle of the trail and thought it looked like a good climbing tree. She strained and groaned and grunted and just couldn't manage to get a single inch up that tree.

She was trying so hard and was so sad when she realized it just wasn't happening. Poor thing.

But we made up for it by letting them play in the sand on the beach for a bit.

I think it looks like snow since we are all wearing pants and coats, but I promise, it's sand. Ella was really miffed when we told her it was time to go. She put her hands on her hips and said,

"But I want to stay on the beach!"

Punk.

We dragged her out of there. We did start out on another trail but about 100 feet down it Ella declared her need to pee. So I go to rush her back to the card to try and find a restroom while Anton and Alex did that hike. I was going to introduce her to the joys of peeing in the woods, but she wouldn't hear of it. What a priss.

Everyone had had enough by then so we headed home. We passed by an art festival along the way and decided to stop. We wandered around looking at all the cool crafty stuff, and I pigged out on a plate full of Polynesian food. Yum.

Later that night we went out and did something too, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was now. Oh well. But it was a fun, full, tiring day.

  1. An update! Yeah!! It looks like you had a fun time "hiking" and sampling good food. Are you done with your scopist course? How did all that grammar studying turn out?

  3. Ok, so I saw those gross spiders, and EEEEEWWWWWWWEEEEEE!!!!! I can't believe it! I am not sure I would have gone back. You are brave. Humor me and don't tell me that they have stuff like that in Hawaii because that might shatter my illusion of it being the perfect place to live. I prefer to live in ignorance.

  4. I remember Haley's first outdoor pee. At my soccer game in a ditch. She is terrified of those port-a-potties, so she went in a ditch. We didn't tell her that there could be bugs, etc. in the ditch.

  5. Looks and sounds like a fun family adventure. You guys are in Florida. Forget about the spiders, I would be on edge about the crocs. Is this in your part of Florida?
